Types of Woodturning
Basically there are only two types of turning, REGARDLESS of what you are making.
1. Spindle Turning
If the grain of the wood is in line with the spindle or bed of the lathe, then this is called Spindle Turning. It doesn't matter if you are making a chair leg or a vase; this is still Spindle turning.
2. Face Work
If the grain of the wood is at right angles to the axis of the lathe, then this is called Face Work. Most bow turning (bot not all!) is face work.
These definitions are important because they determine which tools you may safely use.
